Bradley Cooper Fabricated This Lie to Secure His Role in ‘Sex And The City’

Bradley Cooper, a prominent and highly sought-after actor in Hollywood today, was not always above bending the truth to secure a role early in his career. During a recent episode of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” fellow actor Cynthia Nixon shared a story about Cooper’s appearance on a Season 2 episode of “Sex and the City” in 1999. In this early on-screen role, Cooper portrayed Jake, a brief love interest for Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw.

Nixon revealed that the scene required Cooper to drive a vintage sports car with a manual transmission, a skill Cooper hadn’t quite mastered at the time. According to Nixon, Cooper claimed to know how to drive a stick shift because he was desperate to land the job. However, when the moment came for him to drive the car, he admitted that he actually didn’t know how to operate a manual transmission.

In a 2012 interview with Backstage, Cooper confessed to the fib, explaining that he had taken driving lessons in New York shortly before filming the episode. Despite the preparation, he still struggled with the old-fashioned clutch of the 1962 Porsche convertible he had to drive, especially with Sarah Jessica Parker as his passenger.

With some additional practice and assistance from a stand-in, Cooper managed to complete the scene successfully. The experience solidified his passion for acting, as he described feeling at home on set and recalling the thrill of performing on stage for the first time. Cooper was captivated by the imaginary world of filmmaking, surrounded by fans screaming for Sarah Jessica Parker on the streets of Manhattan during the late-night shoot.

Cooper is just one among many guest stars on “Sex and the City” who went on to achieve significant success in both television and film. Before his iconic role as Roger Sterling on “Mad Men,” John Slattery appeared in multiple episodes during the show’s third season as a charismatic Manhattan politician. Additionally, award-winning actors Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge made memorable appearances in Seasons 4 and 6, respectively, and have since won Emmys for their roles in HBO’s “The White Lotus.”
