As Reddit Users Revolt, the Popular ‘AMA’ May Face Closure

The moderators of one of Reddit’s most popular communities are stepping back due to their dissatisfaction with “poor site management.” The moderators, who organize AMAs (“Ask Me Anything” interviews), including those with celebrities, have announced that they will no longer be involved in organizing AMAs, recruiting celebrities, or verifying people’s identities, as reported by Quartz. In a post on r/IAmA, the team of unpaid volunteers who have been running the community for a decade stated that they will now run it “like your average subreddit.” This means they will focus on removing spam and enforcing rules, while ceasing other time-consuming activities.

They wrote, “We’ll be leaving proof and requests for verification up to the community and limiting ourselves to removing rule-breaking material alone. This does not mean we are allowing fake AMAs explicitly, but it does mean that you’ll need to pay more attention.” This decision comes amidst a broader Reddit backlash against new charges for third-party developers and other issues. In their post, the IAmA moderators referenced a New York Times op-ed they wrote in 2015, where they temporarily shut down the subreddit. They criticized Reddit’s management for making significant changes to the popular website without considering the impact on the community and the moderators who support the subreddits that make up the site.

The lead moderator of the community told The Verge that the most significant change will be the retirement of its IT infrastructure, including a scheduling and verification website because none of the team members with the necessary technical qualifications are interested in maintaining it anymore. In their Saturday post, the team acknowledged that these changes would likely undermine what makes IAmA special. However, they emphasized that Reddit’s leadership has the resources to hire people for these tasks and that they would be open to collaborating with them. They expressed gratitude to everyone involved and described the experience as enjoyable.
