British Columbia has agreed to grant the Canada Border Services Agency more time to develop an alternative to detaining immigration detainees in the province’s correctional centres. This decision comes almost a year after ending the practice. The move aligns with the provincial government’s commitment to human rights, social justice, and equity.
Last July, BC Corrections informed the Canada Border Services Agency of its intention to terminate the arrangement. In response to a request from federal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, BC Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth has approved a one-time three-month extension until the end of October, with the condition that no new detainees will be accepted after July 31.
