Book Reveals Kate Middleton’s Involvement in Responding to Harry and Meghan’s Oprah Interview

  • Kate Middleton reportedly played a pivotal role in crafting Buckingham Palace’s response to Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview.
  • It is believed that Kate pushed for the inclusion of the line “recollections may vary” in the palace’s statement.
  • Royal author Valentine Low conducted interviews with anonymous sources familiar with the response.

Kate Middleton, also known as the Princess of Wales, played a crucial role in formulating Buckingham Palace’s response to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. This information comes from royal author Valentine Low.

During the interview, which aired in the US on March 7 and in the UK on March 8, 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan made several allegations against the royal family. Meghan claimed that Kate had made her cry over bridesmaid dresses in 2018 and that an unnamed member of the family made offensive comments about their son Archie’s skin tone before his birth.

In response, Buckingham Palace released a statement on March 9, 2021, on behalf of the Queen expressing sadness over the challenges Harry and Meghan had faced in recent years. The statement also acknowledged the concerns raised, particularly regarding race, and emphasized that the family would address them privately, even though some recollections might differ.

The statement concluded by affirming that Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be cherished members of the family.

Low, in an excerpt from the updated edition of his book “Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown,” published in The Times of London, interviewed anonymous sources who provided insights into the drafting of the palace’s statement.

According to Low, while some attribute the famous “recollections may vary” line to King Charles’ private secretary, Clive Alderton, multiple sources claim it was actually Jean-Christophe Gray, Prince William’s private secretary, who pushed for its inclusion. Gray had assumed the role less than three weeks before the interview took place.

Despite opposition from at least two senior royal officials due to concerns about the Sussexes’ reaction, Kate was instrumental in ensuring the line was included, as per an anonymous source mentioned by Low.

The source stated, “Kate made a compelling argument that history will judge this statement, and without a phrase like ‘recollections may vary,’ everything the Sussexes said would be accepted as truth.” They added, “Kate doesn’t receive enough credit for her subtle influence. She is playing the long game and is always mindful of her future as the Queen.”

It’s important to note that Buckingham Palace has not officially confirmed Kate’s involvement, and when contacted for comment, Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, and representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not respond.

Nevertheless, Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal commentator, considers Low’s book to be authoritative and well-researched. Low is a royal correspondent for The Times and has been with the publication since 2008. He has accompanied the royal family on various international trips.

The updated edition of “Courtiers” will be available for purchase on July 6, as reported by The Times.
