According to Low, while some attribute the famous “recollections may vary” line to King Charles’ private secretary, Clive Alderton, multiple sources claim it was actually Jean-Christophe Gray, Prince William’s private secretary, who pushed for its inclusion. Gray had assumed the role less than three weeks before the interview took place.
Despite opposition from at least two senior royal officials due to concerns about the Sussexes’ reaction, Kate was instrumental in ensuring the line was included, as per an anonymous source mentioned by Low.
The source stated, “Kate made a compelling argument that history will judge this statement, and without a phrase like ‘recollections may vary,’ everything the Sussexes said would be accepted as truth.” They added, “Kate doesn’t receive enough credit for her subtle influence.
