In a creative and philanthropic move, U2 has announced the release of a unique merchandise collection featuring an illustration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, personally drawn by Bono. The purpose of this collection is to raise funds for the purchase of ambulances in Ukraine.
The limited-edition collection, unveiled on Thursday, includes a range of items such as $90 “Freedom and Fear” hoodies, $45 t-shirts, and a $50 lithograph of Zelensky designed by both Bono and the lead singer of “Beautiful Day.”
The original Zelensky illustration, accompanied by the words “The choice is between freedom and fear,” made its debut on the cover of The Atlantic magazine in June.
This collection, available on U2’s website, is a collaborative effort with UNITED24, the Ukrainian government’s fundraising platform established by Zelensky in the previous year. UNITED24 stated that all net profits generated from the sales of U2 merchandise would be specifically allocated to the purchase of ambulances.
It is worth noting that U2’s charitable initiative comes in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine that took place in February 2022.
Last year, Bono and his bandmate, The Edge, surprised the public with a performance held inside a Kyiv subway after receiving an invitation from Zelensky himself. During this event, Bono expressed his support for Ukraine, stating, “The people of Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you’re fighting for all of us.”
UNITED24 has previously partnered with various celebrities, including Mark Hamill from “Star Wars” and Barbra Streisand, who both serve as ambassadors for the organization.
