US Secretary of State Antony Blinken lamented the number of civilian deaths in Gaza which signals a shift in the US language towards the Israeli government. While the Biden administration has staunchly supported Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military campaign after Hamas’ initial attack, growing death tolls, global pro-Palestine demonstrations, and internal unease at the White House have strained the US’ stance. Blinken stated that ‘Far too many Palestinians have been killed’ and expressed their desire to prevent harm and ensure aid reaches them. The White House has succeeded in certain areas, negotiating for daily four-hour pauses in Northern Gaza military operations. Still, pressure on Israel to clarify its objectives has not led to the clarity desired by US officials.
Amid the conflict, increasing civilian casualties continue in Gaza, as over 11,000 Palestinians have been killed. Pressure from the US has led to negotiations for a potential ceasefire, though Israeli leaders have stated that a ceasefire is contingent upon the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations on a global scale and warnings from American diplomats regarding the US’ support for Israel’s military campaign are amplifying concerns about the conflict. Especially alarming are the proxy attacks from Iranian groups on US forces in the Middle East since the beginning of the conflict – including attacks on US bases in Syria and Iraq, and repeated attacks on US servicemembers, despite US airstrikes in response.
Addressing the public, Blinken and other US officials emphasize Israel’s right to defend itself, but also acknowledge that an immediate ceasefire may not be feasible as the conflict plays out. They assert that calls for an immediate ceasefire must address the potential consequences.
