Blackmail allegations surface as David Cameron threatens to impose penalties on pensioners due to Brexit

As an octogenarian, I am utterly disgusted by David Cameron’s attempt to manipulate my voting intentions by implying that my age-related benefits will be threatened if I do not vote in line with his wishes. This tactic is not only despicable, but it amounts to blackmailing the elderly. Cameron’s behavior has reached a new low.

– J C Rogers, Camborne, Cornwall

It is astonishing that Mr. Cameron would choose to target pensioners and threaten to cut pensions in the event of Brexit. Pensioners are resilient and their voting decisions will not be swayed by such tactics.

– Jenni Dawson-Marsh, Lydney, Gloucestershire

As a small business owner and a Tory voter, I am appalled and embarrassed by David Cameron’s bullying tactics in targeting pensioners. Does he truly believe that after surviving a world war, they are so naive as to not see through this shameful threat? I am constantly surprised by the depths to which the Remain camp can sink. This is another self-inflicted wound.

– Andrew Warbrick, Market Bosworth, Leicestershire

Project Fear has now set its sights on the elderly. Perhaps Mr. Cameron should go all the way and suggest that elderly individuals currently occupying hospital beds will be evicted onto the streets if we vote to leave. Now that would really do the trick.

– Mike Whitfield, Yarm, North Yorkshire

I had been undecided about my vote, but after hearing this threat from a young and arrogant bully and his colleagues, I am now clear in my mind. I will never allow myself to be threatened.

– Paul Wells, Melbury Osmond, Dorset

The Prime Minister’s claim that the “triple-lock” protecting state pensions is under threat is yet another cynical attempt at scaremongering. If this was truly an issue, why did he not mention it earlier? It is now being raised just 10 days before the referendum, when several polls show Brexit in the lead.

– Peter Baker, Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex

Mr. Cameron tells us that pensions are at risk if we vote to leave the EU. But in reality, it is quite the opposite. The EU is proposing regulations for pension funds that will make them more expensive to save for and less generous when paid out. They also propose a financial transactions tax, which will indirectly affect pension funds. Mr. Cameron is aware of these matters but chooses not to mention them. Why?

– Ian Musgrave, Laxey, Isle of Man

Project Fear’s latest threat is a possible £40 billion deficit that will affect pensioners. Maybe the Leave campaign should suggest cancelling HS2 to counter this. That should certainly make an impact.

– John Postle, Ormesby, Norfolk

It is puzzling why our overseas aid program is not deferred and the funds used for the benefit of British citizens. Why has this idea not been proposed?

– George Gooden, Woodbridge, Suffolk

At a recent Facebook live event on the EU referendum, Mr. Cameron stated that in a general election, if you do not like a team, you can kick them out in five years’ time. However, with this referendum, the decision will be permanent. This is a compelling argument for Brexit.

– Mark Dickinson, Runcorn, Cheshire

The German finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, should review history and realize that the British people do not respond well to threats. He should convey this to our Prime Minister, who seems to be ignoring us.

– Bob Burgess, Chester

From Paris, it is evident that the scaremongering that the British people are being subjected to makes no sense. Britain will remain a major force post-Brexit, and continue to be a military, security, and economic power that its neighbors will want to cooperate with. We believe that Britain, like France, has an important role to play in the world. Leaving the EU will put the brakes on the integration of EU armed forces and the development of a “common defense.” Brexit will confirm De Gaulle’s and Churchill’s visions.

– Vice Admiral Michel Debray, Rear Admiral Claude Gaucherand, Paris
