Biden’s Directive: Flags to be Lowered in Tribute to Feinstein

President Joe Biden has issued an order for flags across the nation to be flown at half-staff to honor the late Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

“In memory of Senator Dianne Feinstein, I, as President of the United States, hereby order that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff at the White House, public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, and naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on the day of interment,” stated Biden in a proclamation.

The proclamation continued, “I also direct that the flag be flown at half-staff for the same duration at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

Feinstein passed away at her home in Washington, D.C., as confirmed by her chief of staff James Sauls. She was widely recognized as a trailblazer for women in American politics.

“Her death is a profound loss for many, from those close to her to the people of California whom she tirelessly served,” expressed Sauls in a statement.

Throughout her career, Feinstein achieved numerous milestones for women in public office, holding the distinction of being the first woman mayor of San Francisco and the first woman senator from California. She cast her final vote on Thursday morning.

In praise of Feinstein, President Biden referred to her as a “pioneering American” who made significant contributions to national security, the environment, and the protection of civil liberties.

“Often finding herself as the only woman in the room, Dianne inspired countless Americans and took her role as a mentor seriously. Many of those she supported now serve in my Administration. She played a crucial role in empowering younger female leaders and opening doors for them,” Biden acknowledged.

Biden added, “Dianne was tough, sharp, always prepared, and never held back, but she was also kind and loyal. Jill and I will deeply miss her friendship.”
