President Biden Sets Example, Receives Flu and COVID Vaccine

President Biden, in a display of leadership and public health advocacy, received a flu shot and the updated COVID vaccine on Friday, as announced by the White House.

Encouraging other Americans to prioritize their health, White House physician Kevin O’Connor wrote in a statement Saturday, “As we enter the cold and flu season, the President encourages all Americans to follow his example and to check with their healthcare provider or pharmacist to assure that they are fully vaccinated.”

This new COVID vaccine, recently approved by the FDA, specifically targets and combats newer strains of the virus that are contributing to rising case rates across the nation.

In August, there was a rapid increase in COVID cases nationwide, but according to CDC data, this trend has slowed down this month. Last week, there was a decrease of approximately 2 percent in COVID positivity rates, marking the first decline in over two months.

However, despite this positive development, hospitalization and death rates attributed to COVID-19 have continued to rise, as indicated by the most recent data from the beginning of September.

A Gallup poll released this week revealed that more Americans are currently concerned about COVID compared to previous months. The survey found that around a third of Americans worry about COVID worsening, while a quarter worry about contracting the virus.

It is important to note that the rollout of the new vaccine has not been entirely smooth. Reports from many Americans indicate that they have been charged for the new vaccine despite having insurance, which the Biden administration assured would cover the cost.

The new COVID vaccines have been made available at retail pharmacies across the country starting this past week.
