Biden pays tribute to service members killed during Afghanistan withdrawal

President Joe Biden paid tribute to the 13 service members who lost their lives during a terrorist attack while the United States was withdrawing from Afghanistan two years ago. In a heartfelt statement released on Saturday, President Biden conveyed his sorrow and remembrance.

The devastating bomb attack took place at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on August 26, 2021. It claimed the lives of 13 U.S. service members and caused significant civilian casualties, with at least 170 Afghan civilians losing their lives.

In his statement, President Biden expressed his empathy and grief, saying, “Today, Jill and I honor the memory of these 13 brave American service members and the more than 100 innocent Afghan civilians who tragically lost their lives in the horrific terrorist attack at Abbey Gate. The survivors, both physically and emotionally wounded, will forever carry the weight of that dreadful day.”

However, the Biden administration has faced strong criticism from Republican leaders regarding the chaotic nature of the Afghanistan withdrawal. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) went as far as suggesting that President Biden should face impeachment for his handling of the withdrawal.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), while also commemorating the fallen heroes, announced that the flags at the U.S. Capitol would be lowered to half-mast in their honor. In a post on social media, he stated, “Two years have passed since we tragically lost 13 brave servicemen and women in Afghanistan. To pay tribute to these American heroes, I have ordered the lowering of the flags at the U.S. Capitol to half-staff.”

It is essential to reflect on these solemn events and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Let us unite in honoring the memory of the fallen and supporting the survivors and their families during this challenging time.
