Biden Hints at Potential November Meeting with China’s President Xi: A Promising Outlook

President Biden suggested a potential meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States next month, adding an element of uncertainty to the situation.

When asked about reports that the two leaders are set to have a face-to-face meeting in California, Biden neither confirmed nor denied the scheduled meeting.

“There is no such meeting set up, but it is a possibility,” stated the president during a press conference.

The White House National Security Council declined to confirm the plans officially to The Hill; however, they acknowledged Biden’s desire to continue conversations with Xi this fall.

The last time Biden and Xi had an in-person meeting was in Bali during the Group of 20 summit. Ever since, the U.S. president has expressed his hope for another meeting with Xi.

Biden expressed disappointment that Xi did not attend the recent Group of 20 summit in New Delhi, but remained hopeful, saying, “I am going to get to see him.”

Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China experienced strain earlier this year when a Chinese spy balloon was discovered floating over U.S. territory. It was eventually shot down off the coast of South Carolina in February.

In June, Biden referred to Xi as a dictator while sharing his frustration about not being informed about the spy balloon being shot down.

Xi’s absence at the Group of 20 summit further exacerbated tensions between China and the U.S., as well as other nations in the Indo-Pacific region. China sent Premier Li Qiang as its representative to India and did not provide specific reasons for Xi’s non-participation.
