The Biden administration unveiled a new initiative on Thursday to offer free Covid vaccines to uninsured Americans until December 2024, following the depletion of the federal government’s vaccine supply this fall.

These free shots, purchased at a discounted price by the government, will be accessible to uninsured individuals at pharmacies and 64 state and local health departments.

The Health and Human Services Department also hopes that vaccine manufacturers will contribute shots to pharmacies as part of this program.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 25 to 30 million uninsured adults in the United States, as well as other Americans whose insurance does not cover free Covid products this fall.

Presently, the government possesses an inventory of vaccines obtained from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax. However, these companies do not directly sell the shots to healthcare providers.

In the fall, the aforementioned companies will commence selling shots directly to healthcare providers, which is anticipated to deplete the government’s vaccine supply.

In April, the Health and Human Services Department initially introduced the Bridge Access Program for Covid-19 vaccines. On Thursday, it was announced that the program would cease providing free shots to the uninsured.

This initiative is reflective of a broader global trend in response to the pandemic. As Covid cases and deaths decline, governments have been relaxing strict health mandates, such as mask mandates and social distancing measures. Moreover, the rate of Covid vaccinations has significantly slowed down over the past year.

The World Health Organization declared an end to the global Covid public health emergency earlier this year, and in May, HHS declared an end to the emergency in the United States.
