The Biden administration has announced the AI Cyber Challenge, a competition that allows hackers to utilize artificial intelligence to protect critical U.S. infrastructure from cybersecurity threats. The competition offers a total of nearly $20 million in prizes and involves the participation of leading AI companies such as Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. This announcement was made at the prestigious Black Hat USA hacking conference in Las Vegas.

The competition will consist of a qualifying event in the spring, where the top 20 teams will advance to the semifinals at DEF CON 2024, a cybersecurity conference. From these teams, up to five winners will each receive a prize of $2 million and progress to the final at DEF CON 2025. The top three teams will have the chance to win additional prizes, including a grand prize of $4 million for the team that demonstrates the best security performance for vital software, as stated in a press release.

All participants will be required to open source their solutions for wider use. The Linux Foundation’s Open Source Security Foundation is serving as an advisor for the challenge, ensuring transparency and collaboration.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is organizing the competition and will provide up to $1 million to seven small businesses willing to participate, allowing a diverse range of participants to contribute.

This AI Cyber Challenge follows the successful implementation of the Cyber Grand Challenge by DARPA in 2014. The government aims to leverage the potential of AI to enhance the security of critical U.S. systems.

“We must stay one step ahead in defense, and AI presents a promising approach,” said Perri Adams, program manager at DARPA’s Information Innovation Office during a press call. “This challenge provides an opportunity for cybersecurity and AI experts to access unparalleled resources and promote cross-company collaboration.”
