Bernardo Arévalo’s Semilla Party of Guatemala suspended by court for corruption

Guatemala’s presidential race has been thrown into chaos after a court disqualified the anti-corruption party just weeks before the election, prompting concerns from the US about the country’s democracy.

The court ruling was issued after a prosecutor, Rafael Curruchiche, who has been sanctioned by the US government, alleged irregularities in the registration of Semilla party members.

Bernardo Arévalo, the candidate of the Semilla party, argued that the court order violated election law and stated that they would not obey an illegal decision.

Arévalo, a center-left candidate known for challenging Guatemala’s corrupt political establishment, secured second place in the first round of voting and was set to face former first lady Sandra Torres in the runoff.

The electoral process in Guatemala has faced widespread criticism, with authorities disqualifying several anti-establishment candidates. During the first-round vote, a quarter of voters cast blank or null ballots in protest.

Brian Nichols, the State Department’s top official for Latin America, expressed deep concern about the threats to Guatemala’s electoral democracy and emphasized the importance of respecting the will of voters.

Protesters gathered outside the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, demanding the arrest of Rafael Curruchiche.

While Guatemala gained international recognition for its anti-corruption efforts, recent years have seen the dismantling of the U.N.-backed anti-corruption commission and the persecution of anti-corruption judges and prosecutors.
