Shapiro’s video started with a rather childish act of setting three dolls on fire while holding a toy bomb, symbolizing the release of another film this weekend, “Oppenheimer.” He then proceeded to complain about his producers forcing him to watch the Greta Gerwig-directed film and presented his extensive notes filled with grievances against “Barbie.” According to Shapiro, the movie promotes “angry feminist claptrap” and purposefully aims to divide men and women.
Despite the movie’s nostalgic appeal, Shapiro questioned why millennial moms were taking their children to see “Barbie” and pondered the appropriateness of the innuendo-heavy humor for young audiences. He also expressed annoyance towards Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Ken, Issa Rae as President Barbie, and the role of the perky Doctor Barbie played by trans actor Hari Nef.
Online, people mocked Shapiro’s outburst, finding it amusing that a grown man could be so bothered by a movie about toys. Some even joked about the outfit he wore to the screening, which closely resembled the costumes in one of “Barbie’s” dance sequences.
Despite the backlash, “Barbie” proved to be a box office success, earning $155 million domestically over the weekend. This achievement allowed the film, directed by a female director, to claim the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film in that category, surpassing “Captain Marvel” from 2019.
