Beloved African Lion Passes Away after 14 Years at Sacramento Zoo in California

An African lion residing at Sacramento Zoo has passed away at the age of almost 17.

Kamau, who had been living at the Sacramento Zoo in Sacramento, California for nearly 14 years, succumbed to his health decline, as announced in a recent press release.

Kamau’s health had been deteriorating over the course of several weeks, leading to his removal from the exhibit, stated the zoo’s Facebook page.

“Kamau developed worsening gastrointestinal problems and decreased interest in food,” shared the zoo in their release.

Despite numerous attempts at medical treatment, Kamau’s condition only worsened, leading the zoo’s animal care team to make the decision for humane euthanasia.

According to a report by the Sacramento Zoological Society, African lions typically live up to 10 years in the wild, but can live up to 25 years under human care.

At the age of 17, Kamau was considered elderly, and the Sacramento Zoo acknowledges the significant role played by the medical professionals from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in Yolo County, California in ensuring his longevity.

Kamau was relocated from San Diego Zoo to Sacramento Zoo in 2008.

The lion was known for his powerful roar, which could be heard by visitors and neighboring areas, attracting crowds from all corners of the zoo.

In 2014, Kamau fathered a litter of cubs, and in 2019, his habitat was expanded with the addition of a glass viewing wall for visitors to observe Kamau and his mate, Cleo, up close.
