Belarus Deal: Wagner Head Relocates to Quell Rebellion as Russia Withdraws Charges

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is set to relocate to Belarus, and the charges against him will be dropped as part of a diplomatic effort to resolve the uprising led by his private mercenary group, according to a statement from a Kremlin spokesperson. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also confirmed that Prigozhin’s troops would not face legal consequences for their involvement in the “armed mutiny.” Those who did not participate in the rebellion will be offered contracts by the Russian Defense Ministry.

In an effort to prevent further bloodshed among Russian forces, Prigozhin announced that his troops would return to their bases. He expressed this in a message on Telegram, stating that they would follow the plan and retreat towards their field camps.

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, played a crucial role in negotiating the agreement with Prigozhin. Lukashenko’s office released a statement confirming his involvement in the negotiations.

The armed rebellion led by Prigozhin was sparked by his claim that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was responsible for the deaths of numerous Wagner fighters in a strike on a Wagner campsite. Putin responded to the rebellion by vowing to take decisive action against the mutineers.
