Beidou: China Challenges U.S. GPS Supremacy

GPS, also known as the Global Positioning System, is the oldest and most widely used satellite navigation system worldwide, boasting an impressive user base of 6 billion individuals. Originally developed as a military tool by the U.S. government and currently managed by the Space Force, a branch of the U.S. Air Force, GPS has expanded its influence beyond military applications and has become an essential part of civilian life.

Representative Mikie Sherill (D-N.J.) and co-chair of the House GPS Caucus emphasizes the potential vulnerability of the GPS system, stating that an attack on the system could have catastrophic effects on areas such as logistics, supply chain management, farming, transportation, and aviation.

While GPS remains a dominant player, other countries have also developed their own global navigation satellite systems. Russia has GLONASS, the European Union introduced Galileo, and China launched its Beidou constellation. Traditionally, countries have collaborated by providing free access to their respective systems. However, China recognized the need for an independent navigation system after experiencing challenges with missile tracking during the Taiwan Straits crisis. This realization prompted China to develop Beidou, ensuring autonomy, accuracy, and reliability for its military operations.

Beyond military capabilities, experts believe that Beidou is contributing significantly to economic growth in China, projected to reach $156 billion by 2025 according to Chinese state media. Beidou’s influence extends globally, as China ties the export of its infrastructure projects to the positioning, navigation, and timing data provided by Beidou. This integration with China’s 5G initiatives and its support through the Belt and Road and Digital Silk Road initiatives enhances China’s global influence.
