A beekeeper in Canada was called to a unique rescue mission when 5 million bees fell off a truck on Wednesday morning. Michael Barber, the owner of Tri-City Bee Rescue, received a request from the police to assist at the scene in Burlington, Ontario. He quickly rallied a dozen area beekeepers to join him, while drivers were advised to keep their windows shut to avoid any bee encounters.
According to the BBC, the bees were being transported in their hives to their wintering location when the straps securing them became loose. The driver explained that he swerved to avoid something on the road, causing the hives to fly off the truck. This resulted in a swarm of angry and confused bees. Michael Barber, speaking to the New York Times, described the scene as potentially dangerous but also somewhat amusing. The beekeepers, dressed in full suits, worked to repair the damaged hives while everyone else kept a safe distance.
The beekeepers managed to restore the boxes and the bees quickly returned to their hives. Unfortunately, a few hundred bees lost their lives during the incident, and some beekeepers were stung. The truck driver sustained over 100 stings but thankfully did not suffer serious injuries.
