BBC’s coverage of the Olympics at risk after BT Sport and Eurosport merge in a deal worth up to £540m

The BBC’s coverage of the Olympics is facing a significant threat as a result of BT Sport customers gaining access to extensive coverage through the telecommunication firm’s £540 million deal with Warner Bros Discovery. This merger with Eurosport is the result of BT’s desire to offload its sports broadcasting arm, which was revealed by Telegraph Sport a year ago. Of particular concern to BBC executives is the fact that BT Sport will now have immediate access to Discovery+, the only broadcaster with rights to show every Olympic medal event live. The BBC lost its automatic hosting rights in 2015 when the International Olympic Committee accepted a £920m bid from Discovery, which outbid its rivals. While some Olympics coverage is guaranteed to be free-to-air under “Crown Jewel” broadcasting arrangements established by the government, the BBC received complaints from viewers during the Tokyo Games due to its inability to secure broadcasting rights for key moments. The new deal between BT and Eurosport promises significant benefits for BT subscribers, with Marc Allera, chief executive of BT’s consumer division, assuring customers that they will receive more content without an immediate increase in price. BT has stated that its Champions League and Premier League coverage will remain largely unchanged, at least in the short term, although a shift is expected in the future.
