  • These videos have become so widespread that social media users are now referring to the event as “Trench Foot 2023.”
  • Trench foot is a condition that occurs when the feet are exposed to prolonged wetness. Here are some tips on how to prevent it.

Burning Man experienced challenging conditions this weekend due to heavy rain, resulting in thousands of attendees being trapped in impassable muddy areas.

Following the heavy rain on Friday night, organizers advised visitors to find shelter and conserve their food and water supplies. The New York Times reported that police launched an investigation into the death of one attendee on Saturday. Some individuals, such as Diplo and Chris Rock, were able to leave on foot.

While rumors of an Ebola outbreak were quickly debunked, concerns have now arisen on social media regarding the potential for attendees to develop trench foot.

Concerns have led to the event being called “Trench Foot 2023”

In various TikTok videos shared from the muddy festival grounds, people can be seen walking barefoot, which has raised concerns from onlookers about the condition of their feet.

In one video posted on Saturday, a TikTok user shows festivalgoers lining up for breakfast while their feet sink into ankle-deep mud.

Amongst the hundreds of comments, many expressed concerns about trench foot. One person commented, “Get ready for trench foot soldiers,” followed by a saluting emoji.

In another video, a woman shares that her father is “stuck in the apocalyptic trenches” after reportedly spending $7,000 on the festival. The video showcases the mud-covered condition of his feet.

In a follow-up comment, the original poster reveals that she had encouraged her father to wear shoes after learning about “playa foot,” which is described as a “chemical burn” that can occur in the Black Rock Desert, according to Burning Man’s website.

Burning Man’s website advises attendees to keep their feet “covered as much as possible” to prevent contracting playa foot.

What is trench foot?

Trench foot is a condition that occurs when the feet are exposed to prolonged wetness, according to the CDC. Symptoms can include tingling, itching, pain, swelling, cold and blotchy skin, numbness, and a prickly or heavy feeling in the foot.

The CDC notes that feet affected by trench foot may appear red, dry, and painful, and blisters may form followed by skin and tissue deterioration.

To prevent trench foot, the CDC recommends air-drying and elevating your feet, as well as changing into dry socks and shoes when wet. If trench foot has already developed, the CDC suggests thorough cleaning and drying of the feet, daily use of clean and dry socks, applying warm packs or soaking in warm water, avoiding wearing socks while sleeping or resting, and seeking medical assistance as soon as possible.
