Barbie’s Revenue Exceeds a Billion Dollars, Yet a Sequel Seems Unlikely

  • According to CNN, “Barbie” has achieved a remarkable global box office gross of $1.03 billion.
  • Unfortunately, there is currently no plan for a sequel as no one involved in the project has a franchise contract.
  • Given the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, it is unlikely that contract negotiations will occur anytime soon.

Despite Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” surpassing a billion dollars in global box office revenue, fans will have to wait for any news of a sequel.

As reported by CNN, “Barbie” has achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching $1.03 billion globally within its first three weeks in theaters, with estimates provided by Warner Brothers Studios. Notably, this makes it the first film directed by a solo female director to join the billion-dollar club.

However, the absence of plans for a sequel is due to the fact that neither Greta Gerwig nor the film’s actors have a contractual obligation for a follow-up, according to Consequence.

Prior to the movie’s release, The Hollywood Reporter states that Gerwig was approached about directing a sequel, but negotiations were postponed until the film’s premiere. Additionally, neither Margot Robbie nor Ryan Gosling, the stars of “Barbie,” have signed on for a franchise series.

In an interview with Us magazine, Gerwig mentioned her lack of ideas for a sequel despite the success of the first film. She expressed that she feels she has fulfilled all her creative aspirations with “Barbie” and currently has no new concepts. However, she acknowledged that she doesn’t want to hinder anyone else’s dreams.

Furthermore, with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which affects both writers and actors, negotiating a contract for a sequel with the key players could prove to be even more challenging, as highlighted by Consequence.

In an industry that highly values lucrative franchises, the absence of a sequel would make “Barbie” a rare exception.

Requests for comments from Gerwig, Robbie, Gosling, and Warner Brothers have not been answered outside of regular business hours.
