B.C. Sets Historic Precedent as First Province with Universal Coverage for Opioid Treatments

British Columbia has announced universal coverage for opioid agonist treatments, making it the first province in Canada to do so. This coverage will be available to all B.C. residents with an active medical services plan, according to Health Minister Adrian Dix. The policy went into effect on June 6 and extends coverage to approximately 1,638 people who were previously paying out of pocket. Last year, a total of 34,520 people were receiving opioid agonist treatments in B.C.

Opioid agonist treatment involves the use of medications like methadone, and it is distinct from safer supply programs that prescribe “pharmaceutical alternatives to illicit drugs,” as stated by the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions.
