After careful analysis of all the evidence, we have successfully identified “Fire Island Jane Doe” as Karen Vergata, who went missing in February 1996 at the age of 34. At the time of her disappearance, Vergata resided on West 45th Street in Manhattan and was believed to be working as an escort.
Surprisingly, no missing persons complaint was filed when she vanished. Fast forward to August 2022, approximately six months after establishing the Gilgo task force, we managed to develop a DNA profile from the remains of Karen Vergata, making it suitable for genealogical comparison. It wasn’t until September 2022 that the F.B.I. identified Ms. Vergata through a genetic genealogy review, presumptively linking her to “Fire Island Jane Doe.” Finally, in October 2022, with the help of a buccal swab from a relative of Karen Vergata, we were able to definitively confirm her identity.
It’s worth noting that no charges have been filed thus far. Considering Ms. Vergata’s disappearance occurred 27 years ago in 1996, we must approach this case meticulously. Just as we did with the Gilgo Four investigation, we will continue to diligently pursue leads and gather evidence. As of now, we cannot disclose any information regarding potential suspects, as this remains a confidential investigation. Thus, I regret to inform you that I will not be entertaining any questions. Rest assured, our investigation is ongoing, and we remain dedicated to bringing justice to this case.
