Auction Bidding Frenzy Ignited as Sharon Tate’s Blood Stains Front Door Following Charles Manson Murders

Before disappearing into the night, the killers used a towel soaked in Tate’s blood to write the word “PIG” on the front door. It would soon become one of the most infamous crimes in American history. Now, the once bloodstained door is up for sale. Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies are offering this chilling artifact as part of their “Legends: Hollywood and Royalty” event. This event aims to sell over 1,400 iconic and captivating objects associated with Hollywood’s greatest legends and the world’s most renowned cultural figures from September 6th to September 8th. The former front door of 10050 Cielo Dr. is already surpassing expectations. With more than a month until the auction, bids have reached $25,000, demonstrating the enduring fascination with high-profile and gruesome crimes, as well as the objects connected to them. This fascination has also given rise to the “murderabilia” industry.

“People are willing to spend ridiculous amounts of money for these types of items,” said Bonn, the author of “Why We Love Serial Killers.” On August 8th, 1969, Tate, a 26-year-old and eight months pregnant, spent time with friends at the mansion she had been renting with her husband, film director Roman Polanski. Tate had returned to their home on July 17th, while Polanski stayed in London. On the evening of August 8th, friends Wojciech Frykowski and Abigail Folger, along with Tate’s ex-fiancé Jay Sebring, joined her at the house. Unbeknownst to them, Manson had instructed a group of his followers to go to 10050 Cielo Dr. and “kill everyone on the premises”. In the early morning of August 9th, these followers climbed over the estate’s gate and brutally murdered Tate and her friends. Another team of Manson’s disciples carried out a similar crime the following night. These crimes have both captivated and horrified the nation since.

The front door remained at 10050 Cielo Dr. until the 1990s when Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor bought the property and created his own studio called “Le Pig”. Reznor took the door with him when he left the property. Eventually, the door ended up in the possession of Christopher Moore, who initially intended to install it in an old church he owned. When he couldn’t do so due to historical district regulations, he decided to auction it off.

According to criminologist Bonn, people’s fascination with serial killers stems from a desire to understand them while also distancing themselves from their horrific acts. It’s similar to drivers slowing down to look at accidents on the road, hoping to make sense of the chaos. On some level, people want to comprehend the terrifying nature of these killers in order to feel less afraid. At the same time, the depravity of serial killers can be a source of comfort, as it allows individuals to feel better about their own flaws and shortcomings. Collecting murderabilia is an extreme form of this fascination, as some believe that owning an object previously possessed by a serial killer imparts their energy or power onto the new owner.

However, Bonn emphasizes that trading in murderabilia is callous and deeply hurts the victims and their families. Most relatives are appalled when they see killers receiving attention or even being idolized. It reopens old wounds for them, forcing them to relive the pain of these crimes over and over again.
