Attempted murder charges filed against a Syrian migrant in the Annecy knife attack for stabbing children at a playground.

The authorities have charged a 31-year-old Syrian refugee with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed four young children and two adults at a playground in Annecy, France, on Thursday. The suspect, whose name has not been released, has permanent residency in Sweden and a 3-year-old daughter living there. He was also charged with armed resistance and is currently in custody, having refused to cooperate with investigators. A psychiatrist deemed him fit to be criminally charged, but the motive for the attack remains unclear, with no evidence linking him to terrorism at this time.

The child victims were all very young, with witnesses describing them as appearing to be around 3 or 4 years old. The suspect reportedly mentioned his wife, daughter, and Jesus Christ during the attack. Although all victims are no longer in life-threatening condition, two 2-year-old French cousins remain the most seriously injured. Another adult was discharged from hospital with a damaged elbow. The suspect was stopped by a Catholic pilgrim named Henri, who used his heavy backpack to swing at the attacker. According to Henri’s father, the suspect was “incoherent, saying lots of strange things in different languages, invoking his father, his mother, all the Gods.”

The suspect had applied for asylum in France but was rejected last week as he had already received asylum in Sweden. French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that doctors are “very confident” about the recovery of the two French cousins. Meanwhile, a British and a Dutch girl remain hospitalized but have both improved. The Portuguese man who was wounded whilst attempting to detain the attacker is now out of danger, according to Portugal’s foreign ministry.
