Aug. 16 (UPI) — During a joint practice between the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an altercation occurred resulting in New York Jets senior defensive assistant-cornerbacks coach Tony Oden being hospitalized. Jets coach Robert Seleh confirmed the incident, stating that Oden was caught in some “friendly fire.” The cause of the altercation is unknown, but Saleh reassured reporters that Oden is awake, stable, and receiving medical care.

In another unfortunate turn of events, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage sustained a knee injury during the same practice. It is believed to be a season-ending injury, according to sources from NFL Network, ESPN, and Fox Sports. Gage’s knee injury occurred at the Athletic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, N.J. Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles expressed concern over the severity of the injury, noting that it appeared serious based on Gage’s discomfort.

Russell Gage, 27, had previously dealt with a hamstring issue earlier in the off-season but had resumed practicing. He was expected to be a key player alongside Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. In the previous season, Gage achieved 51 catches for 426 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in 13 games. He signed a contract worth $30 million for three years in 2022 but agreed to a restructured contract in March, reducing his salary for 2023 from $10 million to $7 million and including a team option after this season.

The Buccaneers have a roster of other wide receivers, including Trey Palmer, David Moore, Deven Thompkins, Rakim Jarrett, Ryan Miller, Kaylon Geiger, Taye Barber, Cephus Johnson, and Kade Warner. The team is scheduled to play a preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday in East Rutherford, N.J. Their regular season will begin on September 10 against the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis.
