Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Issue Heartfelt Apology for Controversial Support Letters Backing Masterson

Married actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have issued apologies for their letters to the judge in Danny Masterson’s rape trial. The couple referred to their former “That ’70s Show” co-star, who was recently convicted of raping two women, as a “role model.” The backlash from the public led Kutcher and Kunis to express remorse on Instagram.

In a video posted on the social media site, Kutcher stated, “We understand the pain caused by the character letters we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson.” Kunis added, “We have always supported victims and will continue to do so.” According to Kutcher, Masterson’s family requested the letters as a way to provide insight into the person they knew for 25 years.

Kutcher clarified, “The letters were not meant to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the jury’s decision.” he emphasized that the intention was to persuade the judge to consider Masterson’s qualities as a father, friend, and co-worker, as well as his commitment to his wife and daughter and his stance against drug use.

Alongside Kutcher and Kunis, several other individuals, including their co-stars Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith, actor Giovanni Ribisi, and Masterson’s brother-in-law, Billy Baldwin, wrote letters of support for Masterson.

Kutcher’s letter outlined the 25-year friendship and professional relationship they had, describing Masterson as an honest and intentional person who sets high standards for treating others. He also mentioned spending time with their children and expressed trust in Masterson’s character.

Kunis’s letter emphasized Masterson’s genuine nature and his role as a mentor and friend. She commended him for leading by example and his commitment to a drug-free life.

The defense team requested that the sentences for each count of rape be served concurrently. The prosecution argued for a 30-year-to-life sentence. Masterson was ultimately sentenced to 30 years to life in state prison.

During the trial, the jury deadlocked on a rape charge involving a third alleged victim, which was later dismissed. It was the second trial for Masterson, as the first resulted in a mistrial due to the jury’s inability to reach a unanimous decision.
