As US-South Korea Military Drills Subside, North Korea Fires Additional Missiles into the Sea

North Korea conducted further missile testing over the weekend, launching a series of cruise missiles into the sea, as reported by the South Korean military.

These missile tests occurred following the completion of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.

The North Korean government referred to the 11-day training exercises as “preparation for invasion,” which led to an escalation of missile tests in recent weeks.

In a simulation of a “scorched earth” nuclear attack, the nation launched two ballistic missiles on Wednesday night, targeting South Korean military command centers. These tests coincided with command drills where the North Korean military practiced occupying the South.

According to state media, leader Kim Jong Un stated in a speech this week, “Owing to the reckless confrontational moves of the US and other hostile forces, the waters off the Korean Peninsula have become the world’s largest concentration of war hardware and the most unstable waters with the threat of a nuclear war.”

With tensions escalating between North Korea and the US-South Korean alliance, North Korea has conducted over 100 missile tests since last year. Earlier this month, Kim ordered an increase in ballistic missile production in factories.

This week, the United States issued a warning that an arms deal between North Korea and Russia may be forthcoming, stating that negotiations are “actively progressing.”

During a briefing with reporters on Wednesday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby expressed concern, saying, “Despite the DPRK publicly stating that they will not sell to Russia, we remain worried about the possibility of the DPRK providing military support to Russia’s forces in Ukraine.”
