Arts Council revises funding arrangements following English National Opera’s relocation from London

English National Opera (ENO) has secured £24 million in funding from Arts Council England (ACE) to deliver an annual opera season at its London home, the Coliseum, and establish a new base outside of the capital. This comes after initial plans to relocate ENO outside of London were met with opposition.

After facing backlash, ACE revised its decision and announced an investment of £11.46 million in 2023 to sustain ENO’s operations in London while allowing it to plan for a new base by 2026. The deadline for establishing the new base has now been extended to March 2029.

During the period from 2024 to 2026, ENO will develop an artistic program in the new city while continuing to deliver a substantial opera season in London. The extended timeframe will provide more stability, allow for staff consultation, and foster partnerships in the new city.

ACE will be investing a total of £35.46 million in ENO between 2023 and 2026, with the aim of positioning ENO to reapply for ACE’s grant portfolio from 2026. Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair of ACE, expressed enthusiasm for ENO’s plans and the potential for collaboration with new host cities.

Dr Harry Brunjes, Chair of ENO, welcomed the investment and additional time, stating that it will facilitate the successful establishment of a new base while maintaining a season at the London Coliseum. He emphasized ENO’s commitment to engaging with new audiences and partners across the country.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer commended ENO’s agreement with ACE, expressing support for the organization’s future plans and the goal of expanding access to its work nationwide.
