Approaching Typhoon Doksuri to bring forceful winds and disruptions to China and Taiwan

The coastal city of Shantou in China has taken precautionary measures in response to Typhoon Doksuri, which is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas. As of Thursday, the typhoon has weakened, with sustained winds of 96 mph and gusts of up to 118 mph, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau. While the typhoon’s center will not hit Taiwan’s mainland, the outer bands are still expected to bring stronger winds and rain later in the day.

Shantou, located on the border of Guangdong and Fujian provinces, will remain largely shut down until the end of Friday, as announced by the local government on social media. Images from the area show fishing ships tied up in port and heavy waves breaking along the seawall. Despite occasional squalls, there has been no significant rainfall reported as of early Thursday afternoon.

The Taiwan Strait is a crucial trade route, and the typhoon has resulted in major disruptions to shipping and flights. In southern Taiwan, the cities of Kaohsiung and Tainan have also closed offices and schools. Additionally, Hualien and Taitung counties on the island’s east coast have taken similar measures. Kaohsiung has evacuated around 300 residents from a mountainous area in the district, according to the semiofficial Central News Agency.

In the Philippines, tragedy has struck as a passenger boat capsized in Laguna Lake due to fierce winds caused by the typhoon. At least 21 people have lost their lives, including four members of a family buried in a landslide. Thousands of villagers have been displaced as the storm wreaked havoc, causing power outages, agricultural damage, and the suspension of work, classes, and sea travel for approximately two days.

The storm’s path will take it through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, with landfall expected in China’s Fujian province on Friday. Efforts are underway to restore power to the affected households in Kaohsiung and Tainan, with significant progress made as of Thursday morning, according to the Taiwan Power Company.
