Anna Netrebko files lawsuit against Metropolitan Opera for termination related to Russia-Ukraine conflict

Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, a prominent figure in the opera world, has filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Opera and its general manager, alleging discrimination following her termination after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, includes claims of national origin discrimination, breach of contract, and defamation. Netrebko is seeking at least $360,000 in damages to cover lost performance and rehearsal fees.

The Metropolitan Opera ended its relationship with Netrebko in March 2022, citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the previous month. In a statement, Met general manager Peter Gelb said, “She is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine, there was no way forward.” Netrebko had expressed opposition to the war and violence but refused to specifically condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin, as requested by Gelb.
