Angels’ Comeback Hopes Dashed as Daniel Murphy Announces Second Retirement

Daniel Murphy, the Mets legend, has officially announced his retirement, signaling the end of his baseball career. After briefly coming out of retirement to play for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League and the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate, Murphy has decided to hang up his spikes for good.

In January 2021, Murphy initially retired after playing the shortened 2020 season with the Rockies. However, in 2023, he made a comeback bid, joining the Ducks in March before signing a minor league deal with the Angels in June. He then joined the Salt Lake Bees on June 20, where he had a solid performance, batting .295/.379/.362 with one home run and 25 RBIs in 149 plate appearances.

In his final game on Sunday, Murphy went 1-for-5 before officially retiring this week.
