An American Who Was Previously Imprisoned by Russia Sustains Injuries in Ukraine

A former US Marine, who spent over two years imprisoned in Russia, appears to have sought revenge by getting involved in the fighting in Ukraine. According to a report by the Messenger, Trevor Reed, who was released in a prisoner swap last year, stepped on a landmine in Ukraine about two weeks ago. He has been transported to a hospital in Germany for treatment. An official from the Biden administration states that they are aware of Reed’s injury but does not express enthusiasm for his choices.

The official adds, “Since the beginning of the war, we have warned US citizens who travel to Ukraine, especially for the purpose of participating in fighting, that they face significant risks, including the very real risk of capture or death.” The official emphasizes that Reed made the decision to go to Ukraine on his own. While it is unclear when Reed left for Ukraine, he had spoken to KXXV in Texas in early May, expressing gratitude for being safe at home one year after his release.

The Messenger adds another aspect to the story, reporting that Reed wanted to be sent back to the US after being injured. However, his military contract with Ukraine prevented him from doing so. In response, Reed threatened to go to the media and make his story public in an attempt to get the US to assist him in returning home. Reed had been arrested in Russia in 2019 after a night of drinking when Russian police accused him of assaulting them. The extent of his injuries sustained in the recent fighting is unknown.
