Amir Khan’s Robbery Prompts Caution for Sports Stars Flaunting ‘Bling’ on Social Media

Security experts have issued a warning to high-profile athletes, urging them to refrain from flaunting their luxurious possessions on social media. The caution comes in the wake of former boxing champion Amir Khan’s recent experience, where he was robbed at gunpoint of his valuable Franck Muller Vanguard Chronograph, after being targeted outside a restaurant in East London. Khan recounted the incident, describing how he and his wife were threatened by two assailants, one of whom pointed a gun at his face. The criminals then fled the scene in a car. Fortunately, Khan and his wife were unharmed. However, this incident serves as a reminder for athletes to exercise caution when displaying their “bling” on social media.

Prior to the attack, Khan had posted an image on Instagram while wearing the diamond-encrusted watch, which is believed to have caught the attention of the thieves. This incident occurred two years after Khan faced backlash for flaunting a £100k Richard Mille 32 designer watch on social media, with the caption, “Not everyday I treat myself.”

Security expert Alex Bomberg, from Intelligent Protection, emphasized the importance of athletes being mindful of the connection between flaunting their wealth and targeted attacks. Bomberg’s firm provides security services to athletes and celebrities. He urged athletes to be cautious about their social media posts and to prioritize personal security.

In recent years, athletes have increasingly become targets for criminal gangs. Footballer Jesse Lingard, for example, fell victim to thieves who targeted his home and made off with £100,000 worth of clothing and jewelry while he was away playing a match. Other high-profile sports figures, such as Dele Alli in May 2020, have also been targeted.

Khan had been wearing the stolen watch at a charity event for his foundation just days before the incident took place. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the robbery, stating that two males had approached Khan, threatened him with a firearm, and then stolen his watch before fleeing. The authorities are currently conducting an investigation.

This is not the first time Amir Khan has faced such a terrifying ordeal. In 2018, he fought off an armed gang attempting to steal his £100k Range Rover, an incident he described as being extremely frightening and life-threatening. Despite these challenges, Khan remains a resilient and celebrated athlete, having held titles as the former WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion.
