Amidst Soccer Controversy, Spain Takes Action with One Head Rolling

The Spanish soccer federation has terminated the contract of women’s national team coach, Jorge Vilda, in the midst of controversy surrounding suspended federation president, Luis Rubiales. Vilda had previously supported Rubiales when the latter faced criticism for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the Women’s World Cup celebrations. Rubiales, who also made an inappropriate gesture after the final, has been provisionally suspended by FIFA and is facing legal action in Spain.

Vilda later expressed disapproval of Rubiales’ behavior. Men’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, also apologized for supporting Rubiales and condemned his actions. The captains of Spain’s men’s national team have shown solidarity with the Women’s World Cup-winning team by denouncing Rubiales’ behavior.

It’s worth noting that Vilda faced opposition from some players less than a year ago, with fifteen players leaving the national team due to concerns about the team’s environment. Only three of those players returned for the World Cup. These players had written a letter expressing dissatisfaction with Vilda and the conditions of the national team, but Rubiales supported him throughout the process.

Despite the controversies, the Spanish federation acknowledged Vilda’s contribution to the growth of women’s soccer and thanked him for leading the national team to the World Cup title and their highest ever FIFA ranking. Vilda had been in charge of the women’s team since 2015 and also held the position of sporting director.

During the World Cup celebration in Madrid, Vilda received a mixed reception from fans and was even jeered during the final. The current president of the Spanish soccer federation, Pedro Rocha, issued an apology for Rubiales’ actions, stating that the federation takes responsibility and offers sincere apologies to the soccer world, soccer institutions, fans, and especially the women’s national team.

In conclusion, the Spanish soccer federation has made the decision to relieve Jorge Vilda of his coaching position amidst the controversy surrounding Luis Rubiales. The federation acknowledges Vilda’s accomplishments but also addresses the need for accountability and apologies for Rubiales’ conduct.
