According to the BBC, the recent earthquakes have caused extensive damage in remote areas of western Afghanistan. Witnesses in Herat recount how the initial tremor caused all the houses to collapse, resulting in numerous casualties. The scenes are chaotic, with survivors and victims buried under the rubble of buildings, covered in grey dust. In one viral video, rescuers can be seen freeing a baby girl who was buried up to her neck in debris. It is believed that the hand cradling the baby’s torso belongs to her mother, although her fate remains uncertain.
Abdul Wahid Rayan, a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture, confirmed that at least 2,060 people have been killed, 1,240 are injured, and 1,320 houses have been completely destroyed. The devastation extends to entire villages, and hundreds of civilians are still trapped under the debris. Urgent assistance is needed to aid in the rescue and recovery efforts. Multiple teams, including military and non-profit organizations such as the Red Crescent, have been mobilized to provide assistance on the ground.
