MANILA, Philippines—Alex Eala demonstrated her resilience as she defeated the No. 3 seed Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands in a grueling match to secure a spot in the W25 Roehampton final in Great Britain. Eala won with a score of 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-1.
Despite a lackluster second-set loss and interrupted play due to inclement weather, the 18-year-old Eala regrouped in the deciding third set, securing her second championship match appearance this year.
Eala, currently ranked No. 250 in the Women’s Tennis Association, is set to battle the second seed and world No. 166 Arina Rodionova of Australia in the final on Sunday evening.
In the other semifinal match, Rodionova defeated fourth seed Yuriko Lily Miyazaki, winning with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
“So excited to be in my second final of the year and first-ever final here in London!” posted Eala on Facebook.
After a strong start in the second set, the 27-year-old Dutch player managed to force a decider with a 4-1 lead. However, Eala came back strong in the third set, winning four straight games and earning a chance for her fourth International Tennis Federation crown.
Eala, the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles title, is aiming for her fourth professional title after winning the W25 Yecla in Spain this year and her first two championships in the W15 Manacor in 2021 and W25 Chiang Rai last year.
Earlier in the tournament, Eala defeated Australian players Gabriella Da Silva Fick and Destanee Aiava in the first two rounds. She also stunned the No. 1 seed Priscilla Hon in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
