Alert to Travelers Visiting Mexico: Outbreak of Severe Stomach Illness Linked to Parasite Found in Food and Beverages at All-Inclusive Hotels

Health officials issued a warning today after dozens of Brits vacationing in Mexico contracted a severe stomach illness that causes explosive diarrhea. Since May, at least 74 people have fallen ill with cyclosporiasis, with over half of them having returned from Mexico. Many cases were traced back to all-inclusive hotels in the popular Riviera Maya and Cancún regions. The illness, which also includes symptoms such as stomach cramps and flatulence, is caused by consuming contaminated food or drink. While it typically lasts for a few days, it can persist for more than a month. Last year, a family took legal action against TUI after experiencing the illness during their luxury trip to Mexico. They reported unsanitary conditions around the food and utensils and were bed-bound for three days. Though usually mild, cyclosporiasis can be life-threatening for immunocompromised individuals. The UK Health Security Agency stated that all 74 cases in the past three months were reported in England, Scotland, and Wales. Most patients were female with an average age of 44. Out of the 52 cases with travel information available, 48 had been to Mexico, with 42 staying in different hotels in the Riviera Maya and Cancún regions. The UKHSA advised travelers to maintain good food and water hygiene, even at high-end all-inclusive resorts, recommending the consumption of freshly prepared, thoroughly cooked, and piping hot food. It’s important to avoid certain foods, such as fresh uncooked berries and herbs, unpeeled fruit, and salad items, as they may be difficult to clean. Cyclosporiasis is diagnosed through stool samples, and while most cases resolve on their own, severe or prolonged infections may require antibiotics.
