Alarming Stroke Projections: Research Estimates Nearly 10 Million Fatalities by 2050

Worldwide stroke deaths could increase by 50 percent by 2050, killing as many as 9.7 million people per year, according to a report in Lancet Neurology. The report, produced by an international group of stroke researchers known as the World Stroke Organization-Lancet Neurology Commission Stroke Collaboration Group, also reveals that young people and those in low- and middle-income countries will face even higher increases.

The report calls for “pragmatic solutions” to reduce the global burden of stroke, which is currently the second-leading cause of death worldwide. It causes disability, dementia, and other health problems in millions of people each year. The researchers attribute the high number of stroke deaths to unequally distributed healthcare resources, lack of prevention programs, pollution, lifestyle factors, and other issues. They project that stroke treatments and lost income costs will rise from $891 billion per year in 2017 to up to $2.31 trillion by 2050.

Despite ambitious international targets to reduce noncommunicable diseases by 2050, the world is not meeting its own goals. The researchers emphasize the need for awareness campaigns, low-cost surveillance, better treatment and medication options, and regional cooperation to address the crisis. They also highlight that stroke is highly preventable and treatable through lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and quitting smoking.
