Airstrikes claim 3 lives as Ukraine uncovers plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

On Monday, Ukraine’s intelligence agency, the Secret Service of Ukraine (SSU), announced the arrest of a woman suspected of planning an assassination on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the SSU, the woman was in the process of organizing a Russian airstrike in the Mykolaiv region during the president’s visit. The agency stated that her primary objective was to gather information about the president’s itinerary in the region.

The SSU’s report coincided with a series of Russian attacks on the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and border areas in the northeast Kharkiv region. Ukrainian officials reported that at least three people were killed in these attacks.

A devastating night for Kherson was described by the governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, who stated on social media that the Russian army continued to target homes in the central part of the city. He confirmed that one woman lost her life in the attacks.

Additionally, President Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, reported that Russia shelled the village of Kucherivka near the Ukraine-Russia border in the Kharkiv region. Two people were killed in this strike.

These incidents are part of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with daily aerial bombardments being carried out by Russia. Both countries have escalated attacks on each other’s troops, infrastructure, and military equipment over the past few weeks, as the deadliest European war since World War II approaches the 18-month mark.

In recent news, Ukraine reportedly targeted two bridges connecting the Crimean Peninsula, which has been occupied by Russia since 2014, to the mainland. Russia retaliated with missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, including an assault on a blood transfusion center that President Zelenskyy condemned as a “war crime.” These strikes were likely in response to a Ukrainian attack on a major Russian port in the Black Sea, where Ukrainian sea drones caused significant damage to a Russian warship.

Attacks on strategic ports in the Black Sea have been increasing since Russia withdrew from an internationally brokered deal allowing Ukraine to export grain globally.

In bilateral efforts for peace, representatives from 40 countries, including Ukraine, the U.S., and China, met in Saudi Arabia without Russia’s participation. The talks aimed to secure broad international support for Ukraine’s conditions for peace, including the withdrawal of Russian troops and the return of Ukrainian territory.

China’s foreign ministry expressed in a statement to Reuters that the talks in Jeddah helped consolidate international consensus. Ukraine hopes to hold a “peace summit” later this year and considers the talks in Saudi Arabia as a step towards achieving this goal.
