After raging for almost 2 weeks, Greek wildfires gradually subside – National

Wildfires in Greece subsided on Friday following a nearly two-week-long blaze. However, emergency services continued to work on preventing new flare-ups in the central part of the country, where people had evacuated due to massive explosions at an ammunition depot the previous day.

Fueled by rising temperatures and strong winds, the wildfires have resulted in five fatalities, destroyed homes, farms, factories, and large areas of forest land since July 17.

In the severely affected area of Magnesia, wildfires reached an air force ammunition depot near the coastal town of Nea Aghialos on Thursday. The resulting blaze caused powerful explosions, forcing people to escape to Volos, the regional capital, by land and sea, according to the coast guard.

The shockwave from the explosions was felt miles away, causing windows of several shops to shatter, according to locals interviewed by Reuters.

“They’ve split open, they peeled off, the panels have fallen, they are split open, only metal is left, the ironwork,” said Dina Angeli, a Nea Aghialos resident.

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias ordered an investigation into the incident.
