MANILA, Philippines—Robert Bolick’s move to the Japanese B.League was driven by his desire for international experience, more than anything else.

Bolick expressed his curiosity about whether his game could “translate to Japan,” prompting him to leave the PBA and join the Fukushima Firebonds.

“To be honest, it’s all about the experience. It’s not about the money or anything like that. I just want to try something new,” the sharpshooter said during an online press conference on Wednesday.

He added, “I want to see if my game can succeed in a different culture. By the end of my career, I can say, ‘Okay, I’ve been an import in Japan.’ You never know what the league will be like in 10 years, and that’s my main motivation.”

In the previous season’s PBA Governors’ Cup, Bolick missed several games for the NorthPort Batang Pier, resulting in a 3-8 record and a failure to make the playoffs.

However, when Bolick did play for the Batang Pier in the season-ending conference, he showcased impressive numbers with averages of 21.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.0 steal per game.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Although he was expected to negotiate a new deal with NorthPort, Bolick surprised everyone by signing with Fukushima in May.

He believes that his experience playing as a shooting guard at the international level is an asset he can bring to the Firebonds.

“On the court, I’m the most experienced guard here, having played in the World Cup and other international competitions. I want to be a helping hand and share what I’ve learned from my seniors when I was a rookie in the Philippines,” Bolick explained.

Joining Fukushima is not an easy path for Bolick, as the team competes in the B2 division of the B.League, which means a challenging journey to the league’s championship.

However, Bolick sees this as an opportunity, stating, “That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to go to B2. In B1, you only win a championship, but here, it’s about taking that next step. It’s not just winning a championship; it’s also about getting promoted to B1.”
