ADL CEO Discusses Elon Musk’s Accusations: Uncertainty Surrounds His Intentions

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, recently responded to tech mogul Elon Musk’s accusations that the organization aims to “kill X,” emphasizing the deeply troubling nature of posts on social media as a whole.

During an interview with CNN “Primetime’s” Abby Phillips, Greenblatt expressed, “I can’t really tell you what’s in his head… There is a problem across all social media services. We’ve talked about it before, I’ve talked about it on this network, I’ve talked about it with Elon Musk… Anti-Jewish acts have reached historic levels in the United States.”

Musk, who owns X (formerly known as Twitter), has threatened to file a lawsuit against the ADL. In a series of posts on Monday, he claimed that the hate-speech watchdog had falsely accused him of being antisemitic, which he believed contributed to a decrease in ad revenue.

Referring to the ADL, Musk tweeted, “Since the acquisition, The @ADL has been trying to kill this platform by falsely accusing it & me of being anti-Semitic. Our US advertising revenue is still down 60%, primarily due to pressure on advertisers by @ADL (that’s what advertisers tell us), so they almost succeeded in killing X/Twitter!”

Greenblatt, while reiterating his support for the First Amendment, highlighted that his organization had observed an increase in QAnon hashtags and the re-platforming of notorious antisemites since Musk assumed control of the social media platform last year.

He stated, “I think hate speech, speech we don’t like, that’s the price of free speech. But the question is, are you elevating it? Are you expanding it? Are you making it easy to see for children and other people? Are you finding ways to de-amplify it and tamp it down?”

According to Greenblatt, Musk’s recent inflammatory remarks, his “frivolous lawsuit” against the ADL, and his involvement with figures like far-right Irish activist Keith Woods and white supremacist Nick Fuentes have only emboldened “bad actors with very hateful intent.”

Following Musk’s posts, a #BanTheADL campaign gained momentum on X, leading to a group of masked men in Florida to march through the streets waving flags adorned with swastikas and chanting “Ban the ADL.”

In response to the situation, an ADL spokesperson refrained from commenting on the legal threats but affirmed that the organization remains undeterred by the coordinated attack launched by antisemites, white supremacists, conspiracy theorists, and other trolls.
