Actor Michael Imperioli, known for his role in “The White Lotus,” expressed his opposition to the recent SCOTUS ruling that allows businesses to refuse services to LGBTQ+ individuals based on religious beliefs.
The Supreme Court ruling on Friday stated that web designer Lorie Smith from Colorado cannot be forced to create websites for same-sex couples due to her First Amendment rights as a devoted Christian.
In response to the ruling, Imperioli posted a sarcastic and humorous message on Instagram, thanking the Supreme Court for giving him the ability to exclude “bigots and homophobes” from watching his shows.
In the caption of his post, which featured an image of Smith with the words “Supreme Court protects web designer who won’t do gay wedding websites,” the actor declared his decision to forbid individuals who hold such discriminatory views from watching his work.
The comment section of his post received a mix of support and disagreement, with the 57-year-old actor stating that he believes America is becoming more ignorant and emphasizing that hate and ignorance are not valid perspectives.
Imperioli also engaged in a conversation with a commenter who questioned the issue from a business owner’s standpoint, suggesting that one can simply decline a request politely and without being harsh. Imperioli responded by asking if it would be acceptable for him to refuse service to Australians in his own restaurant.
In a previous interview with Spin in April 2022, Imperioli discussed cancel culture and expressed his faith in the younger generation’s ability to create positive change, stating that they are more open-minded compared to his own generation.
