Otters in Northern California have formed an unexpected alliance with those who dislike the show “Succession.” These carnivorous mammals recently attacked Crystal Finn, known for her role as ATN producer Lauren Pawson in the final season of the HBO series. Finn was swimming in the Feather River near Plumas National Forest when the otters attacked her, causing bite wounds that required hospitalization.
Describing the encounter, Finn stated, “I felt something on my backside and on my leg. I started looking around and yelling out, and the otters popped up right in front of me. Then they dove down and started attacking me again.” The bites inflicted by the otters were painful, and although Finn couldn’t see the worst one on her butt, she could feel its severity.
Finn, who received a Theatre World Award in 2022 for her Broadway debut, was admitted to Tahoe Forest Hospital with bite injuries. Otter attacks are incredibly rare, with Finn possibly being one of two individuals admitted to the hospital for otter-related injuries in July. According to Martin Rosengreen, an emergency room doctor at the hospital, this was the first time they had encountered otter victims.
Since 1875, there have only been 59 documented otter attacks worldwide, making these incidents highly unusual. The Chronicle suggests that the otters responsible for attacking Finn may have emerged due to heavy winter rains that raised river water levels.
In another harrowing account, Jen Royce from Bozeman, Montana, shared her own otter encounter. While floating down the Jefferson River with friends, otters almost bit off her ear. Otters can be protective of themselves and their young, especially in close proximity. They give birth in April and can be seen with their young during the summer.
Finn expressed relief that she hadn’t brought her daughter along for the swim, acknowledging that the situation could have been much worse.
