Activists Urge Macon Bacon to Change its Name

The Macon Bacon baseball team is receiving some pushback from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a group that promotes plant-based eating and animal rights. The committee has sent a letter to the team’s president, urging them to change their name due to the negative health implications associated with bacon consumption. The committee has also sponsored a billboard advising Macon fans to avoid consuming bacon.

The Macon Bacon, a Georgia summer collegiate team, chose its name in 2018 through a fan vote. The team’s mascot, Kevin, drew the attention of actor Kevin Bacon when he wore a Macon Bacon hat in an Instagram post. Bacon-themed concessions, such as bacon-wrapped bacon and bacon-loaded cheese fries, are available at the team’s ballpark.

The Physicians Committee, headquartered in Washington, advocates for plant-based diets and animal cruelty-free scientific research. In a letter dated June 1, the committee’s nutrition education program manager, Anna Herby, suggests that the team consider changing its name to “Macon Facon Bacon,” a nod to plant-based bacon alternatives.

In response, the team’s president, Brandon Raphael, states that the Macon Bacon name and brand have been embraced by fans for their playful and lighthearted nature. Raphael points out that the team also offers a plant-based option in their concession menu. The team sees itself as an organization dedicated to bringing families and communities together in Middle Georgia and beyond.

By including a variety of bacon-themed concessions, the Macon Bacon aims to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere for its fans. However, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine raises concerns about the health implications of consuming bacon. The committee encourages the team to consider a name change, promoting a plant-based alternative to traditional bacon. The Macon Bacon team remains committed to providing a lighthearted experience for fans while also acknowledging the importance of offering plant-based options.
