Action Urged: Alberta Teachers’ Association Calls for Immediate Resignation of Red Deer Trustee Over Controversial and Offensive Social Media Post

The Alberta Teachers’ Association is urging a trustee from a Red Deer Catholic school to step down or face consequences after a disturbing social media post. The post, shared by Monique LaGrange, featured a black-and-white photo of children waving Nazi flags alongside a modern picture of children holding homemade Pride rainbow flags. The caption, “Brainwashing is brainwashing,” sparked outrage.

Jason Schilling, the ATA president, released a statement criticizing LaGrange’s actions. He emphasized the harm caused by the post and labeled it as hate speech. Schilling argued that as a trustee, LaGrange should prioritize the safety and well-being of students, which her post clearly violated. He called for her resignation and urged the school board to take action if she refuses to step down. Failure to address LaGrange’s conduct may result in a formal review by the education minister.

Alberta Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides also condemned the post and expressed disappointment. He plans to discuss the incident with the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools board chair. The board released a statement distancing themselves from LaGrange’s views and stated that the matter is being handled according to their Trustee Code of Conduct.

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a human rights organization, denounced the post and offered their educational programs to the school board. Kristopher Wells, a professor at MacEwan University, expressed disgust at the post and called for LaGrange’s resignation, an investigation by the RCMP, and an inquiry by the education minister.

The issue highlights the need for action against hatred and intolerance towards 2SLGBTQ+ students.
