Abandoned Titanic Documentary on Titan Sub: Deemed Unsuitable for the Purpose

  • Last year, a British actor had planned a trip on OceanGate’s Titan sub to film a captivating and informative documentary about the Titanic.
  • Unfortunately, Ross Kemp’s trip was canceled due to concerns about the sub’s suitability for the expedition, as reported by the BBC.
  • Tragically, the sub experienced a “catastrophic implosion” during its final journey on Sunday.

A renowned British actor had planned to join an OceanGate expedition to the Titanic wreck for the purpose of filming a captivating TV show. Regrettably, the trip was called off due to safety concerns.

Ross Kemp, famous for his role on the British soap opera “EastEnders” and his thought-provoking documentaries like “Ross Kemp in Afghanistan,” was set to travel in the Titan sub. However, the production company deemed it unfit for the mission, as reported by the BBC.

Tragically, the Titan submersible suffered a catastrophic implosion in the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in the loss of all five passengers on board, as confirmed by authorities on Thursday. The discovery of debris consistent with a fatal pressure chamber failure was found near the Titanic wreck site, according to US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger.

After thorough inspection, Atlantic Productions, the production company involved, declared the submersible unsafe. Kemp’s agent, Professor Jonathan Shalit, stated, “Their team assessed the OceanGate submersible and decided against using it, as it was deemed unsafe and unfit for the intended purpose,” as reported by The Sun.

“They discovered other submersibles that had been both safe and successful. However, by that point, Ross Kemp was already occupied with his numerous TV commitments, making it impossible for him to allocate the necessary time,” Shalit explained.

“I am relieved that I won’t be forever remembered as the agent responsible for Ross Kemp’s unfortunate fate,” he added.

Kemp, aged 58, had intended to create a documentary commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking in 2022, as reported by The Sun.

Various safety concerns surrounding the OceanGate submersible have emerged since it lost contact with its surface vessel.

In a lawsuit, former OceanGate employee David Lochridge raised concerns about “quality control and safety issues” as far back as 2018. The filing claims that “paying passengers would not be aware of or informed about the experimental design, the lack of non-destructive testing of the hull, or the use of hazardous and flammable materials within the submersible.”

Lochridge alleges that he was terminated by the company for expressing his concerns.

Another actor who journeyed on the submersible last year reported communication failures. In contrast, “Titanic” director James Cameron reportedly warned OceanGate officials about the potential for “catastrophic failure” of the vessel.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush had previously admitted that the design of the Titan submersible had “broken some rules.”
