A Suitable Yet Implausible Conclusion: Indiana Jones & the Fateful Dial

Father Time looms over “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” a franchise that has been around for 42 years and is now on its fifth installment. The franchise started off as a throwback to the adventure serials of the 1930s, but time has caught up with it. This film will be the last outing for 81-year-old Harrison Ford in the title role and marks the final film for 91-year-old composer John Williams. Director Steven Spielberg has also passed the reins to James Mangold, who does a commendable job with the movie.

The film begins with a thrilling prologue set in World War II, where a digitally de-aged Indy faces off against Nazis and attempts to steal the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek artifact capable of predicting “fissures in time.” Flash forward to 1969, where an older Indy finds himself caught up in a race to possess the broken Antikythera. A fugitive Nazi and a collectible antiquities dealer both want the artifact for their own reasons, leading to a globe-trotting adventure reminiscent of past Indiana Jones movies.

While the film follows the familiar formula of the franchise, it manages to tie up loose ends and bring closure to certain character arcs. Waller-Bridge brings a fresh energy to the film with her witty dialogue, and the partnership between her character Helena and Indy evolves throughout the narrative. However, the film does push the boundaries of believability in its third act.

Critical thinking has never been a requirement for enjoying an Indiana Jones movie, and this one is no exception. Despite its far-fetched plot, the film ultimately delivers a satisfying conclusion to the beloved series.
